They say photos from our childhood make us nostalgic about the past, when in fact, our childhood is stored in the taste of certain candies, the sound of certain jingles, the smell of certain talcum powders, the feel of certain fabrics and the sight of certain phones. The world has changed a lot and it feels like Singapore went into time lapse mode with everything changing and developing so quickly in the past 10-20 years. Here are a few things that’ll either make you feel super old or take you back to a time that has been locked away in a distant part of the memory compartment in your brain. Enjoy reminiscing!
1. Bus Ticket Machine
Imagine if you had to press those buttons and wait for your ticket during rush hour today?!?
2. MRT Map
Those were the simple times.
3. Public Pay Phone
Apparently you can still find some of these around the country! Not sure if they still work.
4. Push Button Home Phone By Telecom
Back in the day when phones had no screens and only number buttons. Telecom was the equivalent of Apple back then.
5. Sentosa’s Monorail
Anyone tried reaching out to touch the trees?
6. Yellow-Top Black Taxis
Nowadays with Uber and Grab, taxis just look like normal cars.
7. Trans-Island Buses
Trans-island buses were later taken over by SMRT.
8. Scotts Shopping Centre
This was the best place to shop back in the day. They used to hang single posters to advertise and now there are huge screens playing multiple video ads!
9. Flag Erasers
It was difficult to find one without staple pins at the back.
10. Wallet Chains
Wallet chains were the coolest fashion statement back in the day.
11. Multi-Purpose Japanese Pencil Box
Playing with the buttons on these things, when teachers weren’t around, used to be so fun.
12. Pop Pop Fire Crackers
These were the ultimate prankster favourites before they were banned.
13. Phone Cards
It’s hard to image that there was a time when people had to use these cards at payphones to communicate with people.
I think I’ve forgotten what Singaporean paper money felt like…
These hopscotch blocks would be found drawn on the ground at every school and HDB car parks.
16. Five Stones
Anyone still remember how to play this?
These would be over in seconds if your classmates found out!
18. White Rabbit Creamy Candy
I wish they could bring these back…without the melanin
19. Old School Snacks
Some of these snacks would only cost around 10 cents! Click here for old school snacks that you can still find in certain places around Singapore.
20. True Singapore Ghost Stories
True or not, they sure made a fun read.
21. Mr Midnight
Not as scary as True Singapore Ghost Stories but definitely a fun read as well.
22. Slambooks/ Autograph Books
Before Facebook, we kept our friends’ details in Slambooks. These would circulate around like crazy before PSLEs.
23. OHP Projector
Every kid in class tried to create shadow animals (at least once) when the teacher left the classroom.
24. Card games like Snap, Old Maid, Donkey and Happy Family
Playing this in school buses sure made time fly by.
I think mine died after 3 days 🙁
26. Trading card machines
Kids with the best cards were always treated with so much respect.
27. Computer screensavers
Ah sweet nostalgia…
This was the most popular game back in the day. I don’t even remember what it was about.
29. MSN Messenger
Back when display pictures were actually avatars.
30. Yahoo Messenger
Not as popular as MSN but it had its perks.
31. Non-aircon buses
Can you imagine travelling in a non-aircon anything now?!?
32. Fare cards
Fare cards sure have evolved a lot.
33. No TV transmission time
Yes, there used to be a time when TVs would stop transmitting because the concept of 24/7 entertainment hadn’t come to existence. This image would generally equate to bedtime.
34. Singha Campaign
Singha the lion would always try to remind you to be courteous.
35. When Social Studies period meant we could slack off
36. Ice-and-fire game
Probably the most fun game we played as kids around the HDB block decks.
37. Sand Playground
Yup, playgrounds were made of sand not rubber…
38. Young Scientist Card
Earning these badges meant a big deal back in those days.
If you didn’t have a pair of Heelys, you weren’t a cool kid 😛
40. Bookworm Short Stories
The Bookworm stories and these characters who soon became some of your best friends.
How many of these do you remember?
