Tuas, or Tuas South Avenue 5 to be exact, used to be a place that only photographers know but now the location is no longer a secret. Despite the remote location, the place is still widely used by photographers or aspiring photographers for its stunning sunset images.
HypeQuiva took an afternoon to explore the area to find out exactly why this place is as magical as people say it is. There are definitely, downsides to the trip but the troubles meant nothing as compared to what we captured at the end of the whole trip!
Before heading over there, it’s always good to be prepared for what lies ahead in the remote area of Singapore. Here are 5 surviving tips you should know before heading there!
#1 – Check The Weather Forecast
You have the photoshoot all planned out but the trip got cancelled because it rained? Yup, frustration and disappointment are plenty in stock for you. So remember always check the weather forecast beforehand!
#2 – Proper Footwear
In a field overcrowded with lalang and other plants, the ground is full of prickly, branchy and thorny plants, and not forgetting how difficult it was to walk through lalang plants that are as tall as you. In order to “trek” and bash your way through the fields, it’s highly advisable to wear covered shoes. Trust me, you need them.
#3 – Welfare Pack
Don’t expect to find a convenience shop or mama shop anywhere near the area and there is definitely no water dispenser as well. Be prepared and bring along bottles of drinks and snacks, especially if you are planning to spend the whole day shooting.
#4 – Weather Combat Ready
Unless there’s a downpour, the weather going to be burning hot regardless of the time of the day. During our trip, most of were perspiring like crazy so bring along an umbrella, cap, sunglasses and even a portable fan to tackle the heat. Oh, then don’t forget the most important thing, SUNBLOCK! To protect yourself against UVA/UVB because we all don’t want to have dull and sunburn skin later on.
#5 – Dress Comfortably
First and foremost, it’s always summer in Singapore. Dressing light can ease the trip and you will feel more comfortable so toss the long pants and jeans, they will only drag you down.
#6 – Have Props On Hands (Or Not)
You can get all fancy with a picnic theme, a whimsical fairy lights theme, or simply go empty handed. That’s what HypeQuiva did and with the lalang field as a backdrop, the photos came out amazing no matter what.
However, if you want to sit or lie down, bring along a mat. As mentioned in #2, the ground is full of prickly plants, so unless you don’t mind the discomfort, having an extra sheet acting as a barrier between you and the plants is certainly a good option.
#7 – Laughter, Peace & Joy
Photography is not only about the end product but also the amazing process. As exhausted as you will be, the entire trip should be fun! Laugh it off and enjoy the peaceful scenery as well as the people you are with. Despite the treacherous route, we had tons of fun from shooting and perspiring, because after all, it’s a team bonding session!
