They say the best things in life are free. Kuala Lumpur boasts gleaming skyscrapers, colonial architecture, friendly locals and a multiplex of natural attractions. It is a perfect location to roam around and have fun. However, fun could be confused with being expensive. Here are ten fun things to do in KL that are free!

1 . Climb Batu caves

The Batu Caves is a limestone hill that has a series of caves in Gombak, Selangor. It is famously known for its massive 272 steps. Tourists and locals come to climb the steps to enter the temple.There is also a gigantic golden statue of a Hindu deity, Lord Murugan.

Slip on your comfortable and go on a free guided walk with locals to learn more about Kampung Bahru. It is a traditional Malay style village in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. The walking tour covers historical sites, beautiful old wooden houses, and traditional shops.

Go to the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum & Art Gallery. Admission is free. It is a great way to learn about the economic history of Malaysia. The museum also has a lovely display of the different coins used in Malaysian history. There is also a showcase of artwork from Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia.

The Central market has been around since 1888 and is the oldest market in Kuala Lumpur. You can window shop at this busy market that is home to handicrafts. As you enter the building, you will come across three different streets highlighting the nation’s multi-ethnic culture: Malay Street, Indian Street and Straits Chinese Street.

7. Explore Perdana Botanical Gardens

Perdana Botanical Gardens, the green lung of the city is more than a garden. They have a range of features from waterfalls to gardens to tree collections and the recently established bamboo playhouse deemed to be a must visit. The bamboo Playhouse is created to inspire the use of bamboo for sustainable development.

8. Catch a movie screening

Head over to Publika Mall on Mondays where free movie screenings are held. The theatre is outdoor surrounded by trees which you can turn into a picnic style outing!

9. Relieve Malaysia’s History

Discover the history of Malaysia during the British colonial period. Colonial buildings surround Merdeka Square. Sultan Abdul Building is one of them, and it is also one of the earliest Moorish-style buildings. There is also a 40-meter clock tower nearby that marked independence and is also considered the ‘Big Ben’ of Malaysia.

 10.  Appreciate wine

There is one great spot to get free wine in Kuala Lumpur. Cornier Wines at the One Avenue, Dataran Pelangi offers a free wine tasting session. It is an excellent opportunity to meet interesting people as you immerse yourself in viniculture. Do note that reservation is required.
